Hot, hot, hot

...and then things came totally different. At day 2 of the contest the wind turned almost completely offshore. Therefore it got extremely gusty in the competition area & hard to sail for the competitors. They managed to finish the doubles, started the second single elimination, but then had to break off competition. Some of the boys and girls did a little bit of freesailing in front of the crowd. Which was very spectacular as some of the moves where almost landed on the beach. At day no. 3 the normal wind conditions got shaken up by Kalima wind. This is a wind from the Sahara which presses against the normal wind at Sotavento making it impossible to do anything but wait till it's over and normal wind gets the change to kick in again. So it was hot, hot, hot at the beach for 3 days in a row. Temperature in the shadow went up to 40 degrees Celsius. Besides eating ice cream, check out internet, going for a swim and hanging around competitors could not do nothing more then wait and hope for the wind to pcik up again. Unfortunately nothing changed till yesterday. Competition is over with just one double elimination completed. Event winners are Marcilio Browne & Daida Moreno.

What's happening (2)

Didnt have much time to post a message this morning, so here is another one. After having some waves the first couple of days the ocean is now completely flat (which in fact means super choppy). But the forecast says we are going to get some more waves (& wind) again upcoming weekend. I hope so! For the freestyle competitors it was difficult to sail today cause the wind was super gusty in the competition area even more towards the afternoon. Therefore they did start the double elimination after the singles but didnt finish it. Winner of the first freestyle round was Marcilio Browne. Daida Moreno won the women finale.
Speed sailors are already dropping in and blasting down the speed course. Their event starts in a couple of days and for sure they wont be happy if it really will get wavy again. Speed sailing is difficult enough as it is so far already!

What's happening (1)

Slalom finished off yesterday. Winners are Karin Jaggi and Antoine Albeau. Women had to fight out the event winner in the last race. It was between Karin and Valerie. Who ever won this race took the event crown as well. Karin started in first position and didnt let go anymore till the end. Congratulations to her for this victory. Iballa Moreno got third and Sarah Quita fourth. Not bad for those two riders who have less experience in slalom than no. 1 & 2. Today freestyle starts. Looks like it going to be windy today. We will see what happens in about one hour. Check out the event ticker at the PWA site to follow the action on the water live.

Fuerte action

Yep, it is windy over here! This morning I had a relaxed sailing session with 4.7. Later on the other girls went out again with 3.5-3.7. Yesterday some of them even used smaller sails. I dont even have such a small sailsize! So I stayed on the beach with my camera. Unfortunately it isnt possible to upload pictures from the internet cafe. So I have to figure out some other way to get them online. I shot more than enough already. Which is pretty easy, by the way, when the world best sailors are twirling around like crazy. Meanwhile I keep you updated with text only to let you know what is going on over here. If you want to get an impression so far, check out John Carters fotos at the PWA-site (follow link on the right).
Yesterday the wind was blowing strong. Competitiors were having a hard time as it was windy and choppy outside. On the inside waves were getting bigger and bigger, till more then 2 meters high late afternoon. In the beginning only the finish was in the surf, but later on also a part of the course more upwind. Which made the races look very spectacular when guys were jumping across the finish line.
Today it was all about speed. And speed they had. Sometimes so much that some of them lost control completely and got catapulted pretty hard. But hey, thats racing.
New faces in womens racing are top freestyler Sarah-Quita and wave champion Iballa Moreno. They are battling it out against more experienced racers like Valerie Gibaudo and Karin Jaggi. Only 2 more days of racing left. It will be interesting to see who will be in front in the end. I guess it will be Karin Jaggi and Antoine Albeau. But till then anything can happen. We will have to wait and see...

In a couple of hours I am getting on the plane to Fuerteventura. I am very much looking forward to this trip. Last time I've been on the island was 6 years ago for PWA freestyle competition. So much has changed since then. Women's freestyle takes place at a totally different level nowadays. Next week will be decided who will take the 2007 freestyle crown. Two events already took place (Lanzarote & Gran Canaria). At the moment the score is even. 1-1, Sarah-Quita against Daida. Who ever wins the event at Sotavento Beach will be crowned World Champion. It will be interesting to see what happens. I first met Sarah-Quita when she was 12-years old. She then told me she was going to kick bud in the future for sure. Just turning 16 a couple of weeks ago Sarah-Quita now has the change to become the youngest female World Champion in history...

Countdown has started...

Only 5 days left till I am off to Fuerteventura to enjoy some Spanish sun, wind and hopefully some waves too.

1 meter high waves were hitting the beach in lines today. Surfers, windsurfers & kiters mingled on the water. Felt like one big playground. Left the water with a smile on my face. Life at the beach is great!

Evening session

Left work one hour early yesterday to go for a ride in Scheveningen. Wind looked ok at the webcam. Just wanted to hit the water when all kiters returned to the beach. Wind dropped. What a bummer. So instead I ate a panecake. Watched a little bit of rain falling down. And hear some guys complain about the shitty conditions. Then suddenly the wind picked up again. With just a handfull of people out on the water I had a wonderful evening session again.

Channel Tour

Yesterday a special windsurf event was held at my home town. A channel tour from Alphen aan den Rijn to Langeraar. Organized by neighbourly surfclubs from Zegerplas & Ter Aar. Start was at Lake Zegerplas. One round on the lake, then on to the channel, turn left direction Ter Aar. With a finish at Lake Langeraar.

30 windsurfers faced the challenge. About half of them were girls! Some of them only started windsurfing a couple of weeks ago. Respect! Sailing on a channel isn't easy. But a fun thing to do! Lots of traffic (all kind of boats) passing by. Obstacles to be taken (Bridges). Shifting wind or no wind at all (which means a lot of paddling). The BBQ afterwards was well deserved for everyone.

Check out Pic of the Day at Stehsegelrevue.de for pictures as well.

Wind returned!!!

What a week! I sailed 5 out of 7 days since last Sunday. Today: no wind. Time to recover. Finally some serious sailing after such a windless spring. Feels good to be out on the water again almost every single day. Although it means a lot of driving from work (Utrecht) to the beach & afterwards back home again. It's definately worth it! Hope to get some more sailing soon...
